This may not be the best way, but it works for me. I dip my Xacto knife in my brown paint and slide it (takes LOTS of practice) along the wooden rails. For those walls that need handrails, Mike Pell has a good suggestion of painting some monofilament fishing line brown first. When dry, glue it to the bulkhead. You may even want to sand down the molded rails and do it this way.

As for the photoetched rails, I lay the rails on the cardboard inserts that came with the photoetchings. Paint the rails with a decent coat of white and immediately pull up the rails. The excess paint comes off on the cardboard.
