Kurt,
I don't have a copy of Eaton & Haas' "Triumph and Tragedy" handy, but that book has the diagram
filed in Southampton by Titanic's officers showing the weight a distribution of coal, water ballast
cargo and draft fore and aft at the time of ship's departure. The figures in Susan Wels' book sound
about the same as those listed in that report. According to the designer's notebook for Olympic, her
bunker capacity as built was 6611 tons. In this respect, Olympic and Titanic were identical. Due to
the loss of bunker capacity resulting from the fitting of an inner skin after Titanic's loss, Olympic's
bunker capacity was reduced to 6141 tons in 1913.
I don't know where Tom McCluskie came up with that ludicrous figure! Titanic's launch weight was
only 26,000 tons. We'd be looking at a pile of coal approaching half the size of the ship!
Regards,
Scott
