Diane:
I figured you were in Texas based on your email address. I went to A&M Architecture School and we spent a lot of time on yellow Pine and other woods, noting their properties, both aesthetic and mechanical. I made the extra effort to over-explain the properties of the wood on the posting to illustrate the look of the wood to the other readers of these posts. You and I know what this looks like. I listed the pantone colors so they can get a starting place.
Scott Andrews says that salt water would bleach the wood, so if that is what is going on, then it is that white. It is just that I have seen it stained all sorts of colors and the photograph you listed looks identical to a stained white wash. Here is a website of a company in Lousiana that sells yellow pine flooring. And Scott, this is the same tree, we can call it by any variety of names, but this is the building product used for the last century that was also used as ship planking. The USS Constitution is planked in Southern Yellow Pine, also called long leafed Yellow Pine, heart Wood, etc. Only the highest grade, used in stained areas, does not have the knots. That is why it is called heart wood in the first place, the knots are hearts.
The web site is http://www.authenticpinefloors.com
Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

James Pepper
